Description This portrait depicts a woman seated in a chair covered in red fabric with a small child on her lap. The woman is wearing a dark dress with a white lace collar. She has a black shawl draped over her left arm. She is wearing earrings, a broach, and a wedding ring. The woman's face is directed at the viewer while her body is facing to the left of the painting. The child (a little girl) is also facing left. She is wearing a red short sleeved drop shoulder dress. She is also wearing what appears to be a coral bead necklace.The woman has dark brown hair and the child has reddish-brown hair.
Notes Catherine Jane Martin was the wife of Warren Viley whom she married on February 27, 1838. The daughter of William Holman Martin and Susanna Smith Hale, Catherine was born in June 18, 1821 and died in March 29, 1886.

Martha was the Viley's fourth child.

This painting was done by Troye when he was staying with the Vileys in the mid-1840s.
