Description This is a John Motley autograph and image. It is a steel engraving of Motley taken from a newspaper and glued on the upper part of a piece of paper with the autograph on blue paper that is glued to cardstock then glued to the bottom part of the larger paper.
Notes John Lothrop Motley (1814-1877) wrote The Rise of the Dutch Republic, New York, A.L. Burt, 1898. Sartain was born and trained in London, England, moving to Philadelphia in 1830. A noted engraver, he produced close to 1500 mezzotints(steel engravings) during his career.
