Description This white on white counterpane has extensive embroidery. The field is constructed of three panels of white hand spun cotton about 30 inches wide. They were sewn together before embroidery was started. The cotton embroidery design is old English, eastern influence with flowers, tree of life, etc. A grape vine winds around the entire edge with leaves and grapes. There are three bunches of grapes on the top and bottom edge and four bunches on the sides. Diagonal from each corner is a bouquet with a bow, a flower and wheat. The flower in each corner is a different type. The "tree of life" sprouts from the vine at the bottom edge, spreads up through the center and is finished off with a large flower and compound leaves. Sprouting from the vine on the upper edge is a smaller plant with small flowers. All four edges are finished with a narrow hand stitched hem. There is no backing.
