Description This is a Conté crayon drawing of of Major Bland W. Ballard as an older man. He is in an animal skin hunting dress and is sitting on a stump. His hat rests bottom up behind him. He holds a long rifle in his proper right hand. A dog with wavy hair lies at his feet just in front of him. The two appear to be sitting in a lush forest scene.
Notes Bland W. Ballard, pioneer and early legislator, was born October 16, 1761, and died at his home, four miles west of Shelbyville, on September 5, 1853, and was buried there. His body was later reinterred in the Frankfort Cemetery, along with that of his first wife, Elizabeth Williamson. Ballard County was named in his honor in 1842.
