Description This chromolithograph on paper is of the Columbian Humming Bird and Mango Humming Bird from the Bien Edition of Audubon's Birds of America. The left image is of the Columbian Humming Bird. No. 8-5, Plate 252. It depicts five hummingbirds flying and sitting upon a pink flowered plant. There are four green and pink males that are flying or resting above a yellow female that is nestled in a nest. The legend at the bottom reads: "Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F,R,S. F,L,S. / Columbian Humming Bird / Trochilus Anna, Lesson / 1.2.3.4. Male. 5. Female and nest / Plant Hibiscus Virginious". The image on the right is of the Mango Humming Bird. No. 8-6, Plate 251. It depicts five green and brown humming birds that are sipping nectar from large orange flowers. The legend at the bottom reads: "Chromolithy. by J. Bien, New York 1860 / Mango Humming Bird / Trochilus Mango / Males, 1.2.3. Females, 4.5. / Bignonia grandiflora". There are two names signed in ink on the back of this chromolithograph that read: "Bart A. Brown" and "Nina M.Visscher".
Notes Audubon was born in 1785 and died in 1851. Bien was born in 1826 and died in 1909.
