|Description||This is a silhouette of either Martha Ragland Overton or Mrs. Thomas Overton. The sihouette features the bust portrait of a woman facing right. It is a silhouette of the figure made from cut black paper and adhered to a cream colored backing paper. The backing paper is cut in an oval shape and has been adhered to a larger rectangular shaped piece of paper/cardstock.|
This is one of a pair of silhouettes. This piece features either Mrs. Thomas Overton or Martha Ragland Overton (Mrs. Waller Overton). The accession files day that the pairs of silhouettes are Gen. and Mrs. Thomas Overton. However, backing materials from the original framing have biographies of Waller and Martha Ragland Overton attached. Thomas and Waller Overton were brothers.
Mrs. Thomas Overton- Thomas Overton married twice and his wives were Sarah Woodson (married in 1787) and Penelope Holmes (married in 1795).
Martha Ragland Overton- Martha Ragland Overton was married to Waller Overton. Their grandson Waller Overton was a Confederate captain and we have his uniform in the collection.
The backing board for the frame has the following biography of Martha Overton: "Martha Ragland Overton/ consort of/ Waller Overton/ Born in Va. Nov. 24, 1757./ Died Mch. 23, 1814 in Ky./ "She was for many years a/ member of the Presbyterian/ Church and a pious and/ exemplary Christian."/ She was the mother of twelve children and had five sons/ in the Indian Wars."
