Description This is a tied crazy quilt is constructed of cotton, velvet, and silk. The quilt is comprised of nine large blocks arranged in three rows, each consisting of three blocks, with a white silk and purple velvet border flanking each end. The blocks are pieced together with elaborate and colorful stitches. The fabrics are multicolored, solid, and pattered silks with pieces of dark velvet incorporated in the design. The designs include pieced and embroidered horse shoes, butterflies, fans, and flowers and the date "1883" is embroidered in the lower right block. The center block has a large green-brown velvet field with a floral and leaf design embroidered on it with the initials "M.P." incorporated into the design. Each end of the quilt has a border that consists of a strip of purple velvet fabric flanked by a piece of white silk down each side. The purple velvet has three sets on velvet floral embroidery on each end. The quilt is backed with cotton and edged on the long sides with blue and gold metallic thread rope. The tie quilting is visible on the back as red thread was used for the tying.
Notes This quilt was made by Mary Elizabeth Martin, wife of Henry Clay Poynter. Mrs. Poynter was born May 17, 1853 and died December 22, 1920.
