Description This chromolithograph on paper is of the White Nun from the Bien Edition of Audubon's Birds of America. No. 9-4, Plate 414. It depicts two waterfowls, one is flying above in the air and is black and white. The other is a red headed black and white bird and is floating in the water while looking above at the flying waterfowl. There is bright blue water and a rocky landscape in the background. The legend at the bottom reads: "Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F.R.S., F.L.S. / Chromolithy. by J. Bien, New York 1860 / Smew or White Nun / Mergus Albellius, L. / Male 1. Female 2." On the back are two signatures in ink that read: "Bart A. Brown" and "Nina M. Visscher".
Notes Audubon was born in 1785 and died in 1851. Bien was born in 1826 and died in 1909.
