Description This is a black enameled cast iron hearth. It has a cast iron grate stand inserted into three holes in the hearth, with the tangs bent over.
Notes Collected by former staff at Eastern State Hospital for a planned museum, 1956-69. Eastern was opened in 1824 as the state "Lunatic Asylum." The collection documented the lives of patients as sick persons and as wards of the state forced to earn their keep.
