Description This chromolithograph on paper is of the Pinnated Grous from the Bien Edition of Audubon's Birds of America. No. 4-1, Plate 296. It depicts three Grouse on a grassy plain. Orange lilies grow on the right, a river with a wooded shore and islands are in the background along with the sun setting behind some mountains to the left. There is a male that is flying above the crouching female and there is another male that is to the right that is flaring his orange neck feathers and opening his beak in a challenge to the flying male. The legend at the bottom reads: "Drawn from Nature by J.J. Audubon, F,R,S. F,L,S. / Chromolithy. by J. Bien, New York 1860 / Pinnated Grous, Tetrao Cupido. Lin. Males, 1. 2. Female, 3. Lilium superbum." On the back are two signatures in ink that read: "Bart A. Brown" and "Nina M. Visscher".
Notes Audubon was born in 1785 and died in 1851. Bien was born in 1826 and died in 1909.
