Description Chromolithograph of a Pileated Woodpecker by J. J. Audubon from the Bien Edition of "Birds of America." The image depicts four woodpeckers perched abound the large mossy branches of tree with a Taccoon Grape vine also wrapped around it. The Top bird has what appears to be a large fuzzy worm in its mouth. The two bottom birds appear to be pecking at each other. Connecting to the vine are large broad leaves and blueish black grapes. The top left corner reads "No.7-2" and the upper right corner reads "PLATE 257." The bottom left corner reads, "Drawn from Nature by J. J. Audubon, F. R. S., F. L. S." and the bottom right corner reads "Chromolithy by J. Bien, New York 1860." The middle legend reads "Pileated Woodpeaker/PICTUS PILEATUS. Linn./ Adult Male, 1. Adult Female, 2. Young Males 3,4./ Taccon Grape. Vitis astivalis." On the back are two signatures signed in faded brown ink, "Bart A. Brown" and "Nina M. Visscher."
Notes Audubon was born in 1785 and died in 1851. Bien was born in 1826 and died in 1909.
