Description This is a velvet political ribbon that was created for the 1888 Presidential campaign of Grover Cleveland. The ribbon has a black background and cotton embroidery in yellow, red, white and blue. At the top of the ribbon there is an embroidered yellow rooster facing towards the proper right. Beneath the rooster is the inscription, "Cleveland / & / Thurman" in white thread. At the bottom of the ribbon there are two crossed flags which are made to resemble the American Flag, but only have four stars in the blue field. The ribbon has a yellow embroidered border and yellow tassels hanging from the bottom.
Notes Grover Cleveland and Allen G. Thurman were the Democratic nominees for President and Vice President in 1888. They lost to Benjamin Harrison and Levi P. Morton. Cleveland had been elected president in 1884, and would be again in 1892.
