Description This is a tobacco basket. It has wooden slats woven into shallow bent wood tobacco basket. There are two thicknesses woven vertically and diagonally. They are secured by bent wood rims nailed to ends of slats w/wire nails. The rims are painted yellow and stenciled, "GREENVILLE, NC/555";
Notes Found in unused area of the New Deal-Angliana Tobacco Warehouse in Lexington. Baskets were introduced after the turn of the century to raise tobacco piles off the floor of the warehouse and to increase the speed of the auction process. Baskets traveled with the stacked hands of tobacco and thus the North Carolina basket in Kentucky. Baskets were discontinued with the advent of baling technology in the 1980s.
