Notes |
The Johnson Semi-automatic Rifle M1941, was developed by Marine Corps Major Melvin M. Johnson, after his observation of the U.S. M1 Garand rifle and the Pedersen Semi-Automatic rifle during trials at Springfield Armory in 1935. Johnson felt he could produce a rifle that would be simpler to manufacture and more reliable. The Johnson appeared soon after the Army had adopted the M1 Garand. Popular thinking was that the Johnson was far superior to the M1. Tests and demonstrations during 1939-1940, however, indicated that the Johnson was not superior to the M1. The rifle was used for a short time by the U.S. Marines, and significant quantities were made for the Dutch East Indies. |
