Notes |
This compass belonged to Robert Bertran "Bob" Funk (1921-2011). Born in Louisville, Funk attended St. Xavier High School. Funk enlisted as a Private in the Army Air Corps on April 16, 1942. He would achieve the final rank of Lieutenant. Funk served as a bombardier during World War II. He was stationed at both Biggs Field in Texas and Presque Island Army Air Field in Maine. Founded by Swiss immigrant Albert Wittnauer in 1885, the Wittnauer company initially focused on watchmaking. Due to their reputation as precise and reliable, Wittnauer watches were used by the U.S. Navy in aviation tests. In 1941, due in part to the company's long relationship with the American military, the U.S. military gave Wittnauer a contract to produce compasses. The compasses were included as part of a survival kit for U.S. aviators, and were frequently seen as Officer’s compasses. Donated by Debra and Arthur "Skip" Davis. Debra was the daughter of Robert. |
