This coin purse is leather and has a silverplate top edged with brass. The top of the purse folds over with the metal plate as the top. The brass edge has a woven fabric like design. The purse has a ball clasp. The scene on the silver top is of a race track with a jockey on a horse headed for the finish line. There is a two story structure on the right and on the left behind the main horse is the head of another horse. There is a swag design around the outside edge of the scene. On the inside of the purse under a piece of plastic is a white card with the name of a bar in St. Louis, Missouri. The card reads: Phone: Bell, Sidney 1406 Compliments of KARTYE BROS. BAR Choice Wines, Liquors and Cigars 2801 South Ninth Street ST. LOUIS, MO |
Notes |
The purse belonged to African-American jockey William "Billy" Walker (1860-1933). He rode Kentucky Derby winner, Baden Baden in 1877. He was a writer for many turf magazines and was also an advisor for Hamburg Place, the John Madden farm in Lexington, KY. Coin purses with business cards on the inside like this one were often used as business give-aways/advertising items. |
