Notes |
Worn by Charles H. Stapleton (1927-1995) during his service in the United States Air Fore. Born in Claiborne County, Tennessee, the Stapleton family moved to Bell County, Kentucky, in the early 1940s. Stapleton was turned down for enlistment in the Navy in early 1945 due to his red-green color blindness. Drafted in October 1945, Stapleton was given six months deferment to game weight as he only weighed 104 pounds at the time. Stapleton enlisted in the Army Air Force on May 7, 1946, going on to serve in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Discharged in June 1968, Stapleton retired from the Air Force Reserve in May 1976, earning the final rank of senior master sergeant. KHS also maintains "My twenty-two plus years of military service" by Charles Homer Stapleton in its records. |
