Description |
This political campaign button is made from a thin layer of printed paper which has been adhered using celluloid to a metal button form. The printed design shows an image of the White House against a blue sky with two oval inserts bearing the pictures of Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro (Mondale on the left and Ferraro on the right). The two photographs are in color and have a very thin, yellow frame. Across the top of the button is printed "Mondale / 1984 / Ferraro" in all capital white letters. On either side of the word "Ferraro" are two tiny, red stars with white outlines. There is a simple pin on the back of the button. Also on the back of the button is a small yellow sticker with information about the manufacturer which reads: "Creative Photo Crafts / 5433 Schultz Drive / Sylvania, OH 43560 / 419-882-2051." |

Walter Mondale, Vice President with Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1980, was defeated by incumbent Republican Ronald Reagan and his running mate George H. W. Bush in the 1984 Presidential Election. Mondale's running mate was Geraldine Ferraro, an attorney and politician. She served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York's 9th district between 1979 and 1985 and was also the United States Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights from 1993 to 1996. This object was donated on September 1, 1988 by Drexell R. Davis. Davis, a self-described "Yellow Dog" Democrat, held several elected positions in the Kentucky state government. His thirty-three years of public service prompted his interest in collecting political memorabilia. |
