This hand held sign is a piece of heavy white paper attached to a wood stick with two metal staples. The paper is rectangular in shape and is attached vertically. It is printed in black ink. Just above center is an image of Martin Luther King Jr., leading the marchers in Frankfort, Ky., in 1964. Above the image is printed "COMMEMORATING / THE 50th ANNIVERSARY / OF THE MARCH ON FRANKFORT." Below the image is printed "CREATING / A LIVABLE / COMMUNITY" in very large letters. In the bottom right corner is printed "Community Action / COUNCIL" with a logo of an upwards pointing arrow. The stick is a paint stirring stick. The handle, which is curved sticks out below the paper and is printed in orange ink. It is possible to see the Home Depot logo and a paint brush. The reverse of both pieces is blank. |
Notes |
This sign with six others was carried by a participant during the 50th Anniversary of the March on Frankfort event on Wednesday March 5, 2014 in Frankfort, Ky. The signs were collected by members of the Kentucky Historical Society Staff with the intention that they would be considered for Kentucky Historical Society collections. The original March on Frankfort was held on March 6, 1964. Approximately 10,000 participated in the demonstration of Kentuckians in support of an equal rights bill in the Kentucky Legislature. The bill prohibited segregation in restaurants, hotels and other public accommodations. Frank Stanley Jr., editor of The Louisville Defender (a black newspaper) recruited Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., baseball player Jackie Robinson and musicians Peter, Paul and Mary to draw national attention to the event. Dr. King led marchers to the steps of the Capitol Building on the rainy, cold day. The bill failed in the legislature, but another one passed in 1966. Kentucky is considered to be the first southern state to pass a civil rights law. |
