Description |
There are two parts to this artifact: a) the pen and b) the envelope in which the owner stored the pen. Part a is a nib pen with long, tapered wooden handle painted black at the nib end. The nib is black metal and has a "V" shape cut out in it. The handle has a reddish stain and has a stamp that reads "Eagle Pencil Co., NY/PAT'D OCT 2 1883." There is also an "E" carved into the handle. On the nib there is "708" and the partial wording "THE/PARAG/BLACKS." Part b is a legal size envelope that has in the following printed in the upper left hand corner: "Geo. Washington/Attorney at Law/N.W. Cor. Fifth and York Streets/Newport, KY." Handwritten on the front of the envelope is: "The Pen with which George Washington signed the Constitution of KY in 1891." |
Notes |
The pen belonged to George Washington (a distant relative of George Washington). He practiced law at offices on the Northwest corner of Fifth and York Streets, in Newport, Kentucky. He was chosen a representative to the 1890 constitutional convention and was the chairman of the Committee on Elections "making a warm fight for the adoption of the secret ballot system." He used the pen to sign the Kentucky constitution in 1891. His birth date is 1843 and he died in 1905 in Newport, Kentucky. He was married in 1867 to Jane Ramsey of Newport. |
