Notes |
This combination was worn by the donor, Anna Coleman Van Meter (1890-1990), on her October 30, 1919 wedding day to James Dunlap Gay Prewitt (1888-1954). Also in the collection are (.1) wedding dress, (.3) shoes, and (.4) stockings. The couple was married by Rev. John MacNeill at the home of Anna's parents, Nelson and Elizabeth Van Meter, in Winchester, Kentucky. The Lexington Herald described the wedding as "one of the most beautiful affairs of the autumn in the Blue Grass country and the union of prominent and leading families. The house was decorated with quantities of smilax and white cosmos, an altar being arranged in the drawing room by the mantel of the smilax banked with white cosmos and clusters of tall white candles." "The bride wore a gown of ivory satin with trimmings of rare old lace which had been on her mother's wedding dress, a veil of tulle fastened with a coronet of orange blossoms, and carried a bouquet of liles of the valley." The couple began their married life at Stanley House, the home of Prewitt's parents, Stanley and Henrietta. Prewitt was a farmer in Clark County. |
