Description |
This is an ivory silk wedding gown. The sleeves, collar, and waist are trimmed with pearl passementerie and lace. It has a square neckline and tight three-quarter length sleeves. The skirt and bodice are of matching fabric. The front panel of the bodice and the skirt are made of cut- velvet. The single breasted bodice has twelve pearl buttons. The watteau train has double cording at the hem. There are 3" wide decorative silk pleats around the hem of the skirt. |

The gown in this donation was first worn by Susie Lightfoot Gooch who married Judge George Kimbrough Anderson on 12/22/1884 at Louisa Court House in Virginia. Mrs. Anderson's daughter, Ella Kimbrough Anderson, wore the dress at her wedding in 1911. She married James Lemuel Wills West in Virginia. In 1916 another one of Mrs. Anderson's daughters wore the dress. Mary Gooch Anderson, married William Elza Sweeney in Clifton Forge, Virginia on 4/26/1916. The dress was worn for a fourth time by Mary's daughter, Margaret Kimbrough Sweeney. Margaret (the donor) married Woodrow Wilson Foley on 9/4/1949 in Lexington, Kentucky. Margaret did not wear the other items in the donation, except for the orange blossoms. |
