Notes |
This costume was made by Virginia Rose Jenkins around 1950 for a program at the Camp Paradise Valley Salvation Army Camp in Burkesville, KY. Virginia made the costume at home in Danville, KY from found materials such as burlap, plastic, etc. The Girl Guard's camp programs had 5 year levels that each had a Native American name. This costume was made for her 5th year at camp. Virginia Rose Jenkins (b. April 5, 1938) is the daughter of Elmore and Luzinne Lane Jenkins. She became involved with the Salvation Army as a girl and attended the Salvation Army in Paradise Valley for several years in the 1950s. The Jenkins family lived right across the street from the Salvation Army building in Danville, KY and Virginia and her siblings became involved with the church programs because of it's many activities for children and youths. Virginia served as an officer for the Danville Salvation Army from 1955-1960. In 1960 she moved to Lexington, Kentucky and married John Garland. She continued to serve as an officer for the Salvation Army in Lexington. In 2005, Virginia was awarded the 50 year participation award by the Salvation Army and continues to be active in the organization. |
