Description |
This United Daughters of the Confederacy application is printed on white paper and printed with black ink interspersed with lines for the applicant to fill out. At the top, centered, underlined and in black ink are the words, "APPLICANTS MUST FILL ALL BLANKS AND SIGN NAME WITH INK." Underneath begins the actual application. The application, written on in majority brown but with some black ink, has been filled out by a Mrs. Ella Hart Bailey, born September 27th, 1854, from Muscogee, Georgia and the daughter of Major C.J. Hart, the Quartermaster of Lieutenant Earley's Division, and who was discharged after General Lee's surrender at Appomattox. She is applying to become a member of the Warren Grigsby Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in Stanford, Lincoln Co., Kentucky. At the bottom right, 3 members of the UDC's Committee on Credentials have signed that they find Mrs. Bailey "worthy of membership." |

Ella Hart married Dr. Steele Bailey on November 6, 1878 in Lincoln County, Kentucky. Dr. Steele Bailey (1842-1931) was a native of Shelby County, Kentucky who practiced medicine in Stanford, Kentucky. He served for many years as the treasurer of the Kentucky Medical Association and was elected president in 1903. He moved to Mammoth, Utah in 1904 and practiced there until retiring in 1915. |
