This black silk handkerchief is almost square. It has a distinct border two inches from the edges created by pulling and grouping threads from the weave. |
Notes |
According to the family, this handkerchief is a mourning kerchief used in 1891 by Elizabeth Trotter Montgomery Payne (Mrs. John Breckinridge Payne). It may have been used during her mourning period after the death of her husband, John Breckinridge Payne. John B. Payne graduated from Transylvania University and settled in Clark County, Ky., in 1827. In 1832, he married Elizabeth Trotter Montgomery. They moved to Fayette County, Ky., in 1833, where he engaged in stock raising, bagging, and the making of rope. |
