Description |
This is a page from Harpers Weekly. It is entitled "The War in Kentucky--In and About Paducah." There are five scenes. Starting at the top is a scene entitled "Fremont's Fleet of 13 Steamers" and "125 Barges Off New Albany at the Falls of the Ohio". It shows a river scene with three steamboats tied up to the dock in the foreground. There is a man in a top hat and a little boy on land in front of the steamboats. They are looking off to the left. Behind them is a man on horseback talking to two other men. There are several people on the dock near the boats. There are small barges and skiffs tied up at the dock as well. On the far right of the image is a steamboat with the name "United States Packet W. Thomas" painted on the side. In the background can be seen the cityscape of New Albany, Indiana. The second set of scenes is located in the middle of the page. From the left: The first one is a scene entitled "U.S. Marine Hospital, Paducah." It shows a four story building in the background. The building has an inset front section of porches with columns. The building has a cupola with a flag flying from it. The building has a picket fence around it. In the foreground there is a soldier with a gun and there is a cow to his left. The middle scene in that section is "Entrenchments at Paducah." In the foreground there is a line of bushes/shrubs. In the mid-ground is a defensive structure with a cannon on the top. To the left of that is a man riding a horse. to the right and in the background is another entrenchment. In the left background is a farm house with a plank fence. The third image in that section is the "Court House At Paducah." It shows a two story building with a cupola and a front portico with columns. There are large rounded arched windows on either side of the portico. There are two people standing on the porch of the building. There is a plank fence and a stand of trees to the right of the building. The last image is on the bottom. It shows a boat bridge across the Ohio River. In the foreground slightly left of center are two boats with two people in each. On the far right there are three soldiers on the boat bridge. In the back behind the bridge is a steamboat with steam coming from its stacks. The shore can be seen on the right in the background with a large stand of trees. |
