Notes |
Luke Pryor Blackburn (1816-1887) was born in Woodford County to Lavinia St. Clair Bell and Edward M. Blackburn. He served as the 28th governor of Kentucky from 1879-1883. A physician prior to the Civil War, Blackburn was respected for his work in curbing the spread of yellow fever. As governor he was mainly concerned with prison reform, often issuing pardons in order to relieve overcrowding. He is credited with getting the legislature to fund a new prison at Eddyville. The artist, Nicola Marschall (1829-1917), was born in Prussia. Marschall immigrated to Alabama in 1849. He moved to Louisville in 1873 and opened a portrait studio. He was a prolific painter, often traveling to Versailles, Lexington, and throughout the south. The portrait was donated by his wife, Julia Churchill Blackburn. |
