Description |
This print photograph is a three-quarter portrait of Rosa Rapp, Army Nurse Corps. She has brown hair and hazel eyes. She is wearing a uniform consisting of a navy blue suit with a white collar, a hat, and gloves. There are two inscriptions on the reverse. The first reads, "[sent 7/29?] / Rapp. / eyes - hazel / hair - very dark brown / comp - good color / suit-waist, hat & gloves - navy blue / wht turn over - on collar." The second inscription reads, "Rosa Rapp A.N.C. / of Louisville city Hosp. Alumna / Died La Harve France / Oct. 4, 18 with US base Hosp 59th". |

Rosa Rapp was a Red Cross nurse from Jeffersonville, IN who died of influenza in Le Harve, France on October 4, 1918. She was born on December 6, 1894. After graduating from the Ursuline Academy of Louisville, Rapp trained at the Louisville City Hospital Training School for Nurses from 1914-1917. She volunteered for service in the Army Nurse Corps, Base Hospital No. 59 and arrived in France on September 24, 1918. The photo was unveiled in a ceremony in the Historical Society rooms of the new capitol on Armistice Day, 1920. Colonel Irvin Abell, Emma Hunt, and Captain Charles N. Hobson were in attendance. According to the Federal Writers' Project "Old Capitol and Frankfort Guide" (1939), the portrait hung for a time in the Lower Hall of the Old State Capitol. |
