Description |
This card features a print of a watercolor done by Howard Watson and served as an official greeting card during the Carter Administration. The print is of a winter scene outside the White House. Human figures holding pro-Carter-Mondale signs stand outside the gates. Printed below the scene in black, italicized lettering are the words "Thanks for your friendship and support! / With our best wishes," accompanied by printed signatures of Jimmy Carter and Rosalynn Carter. In the bottom left corner of the watercolor is the printed signature of the artist, "Howard Watson, A.W.S." |

James Earl "Jimmy" Carter was the 39th President of the United States from 1977 through 1981. He was also the recipient of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize. Before he became President, Carter served as a U.S. Naval officer, was a peanut farmer, and served two terms as a Georgia State Senator and one as Governor of Georgia. Eleanor Rosalynn Carter married Jimmy Carter in 1946 and as First Lady from 1977 to 1981 championed research and reform surrounding issues of mental illness. Howard Watson is a watercolor artist who served as the "Artist in Residence" at the White House during the Carter Administration. His painting of the White House was used for President Carter's Official Greeting Cards. Watson is an Honorary Member of Allied Artists of America (AAA), the Philadelphia Watercolor Society (PWCS), and the American Watercolor Society (AWS). This item was donated by Drexell R. Davis on December, 30 1986. Davis, a self-described "Yellow Dog" Democrat, held several elected positions in the Kentucky state government. His thirty-three years of public service prompted his interest in collecting political memorabilia. |
