Description |
This Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) piece is comprised of two part, the badge (a) and the original packaging (b). The badge has a pinback, with brass framed celluloid piece depicting two clasped hands. The obverse has two ribbons suspended. The first is a white ribbon with two crossed American flags, which terminated in a round medallion with a silver border and a celluloid center with the G.A.R. medal depicted. The second ribbon is a red, white, and blue ribbon, with the name of the post and city ("Garfield Post No. 2, Covington, KY."), embossed in silver lettering. The ribbon terminates in a brass metallic fringe. The reverse of the ribbon is a black ribbon stitched to the back of the red, white, and blue ribbon. It is embossed with silver lettering of "In Memoriam," then the G.A.R. medal, and the post's name and city. It terminates with a brass metallic fringe. The original packaging is an envelope with a string tie, printed with the manufacturers information on the front. Between the ribbons is a distributors tag. |

This Grand Army of the Republic badge was owned and used by Charles Fletcher Maxfield. Maxfield was born on May 28th, 1842 in Overton, Tennessee. During the Civil War, he served with Company D, South Cumberland Battalion, Kentucky State Volunteers, USA. After the war Maxfield settled in Covington, Kentucky, were he operated a blacksmith business with his son Herman Porter Maxfield. There he joined the James A. Garfield Post No. 2 of the G.A.R. The badge was used to attend meetings and reunions. It is reversible and the reverse was used for funeral services. Charles Maxfield died on April 5, 1926 and is buried in the Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington, Kentucky. |
