Description |
This piece is a M1860 Staff and Field Officers Sword. The sword (part a) is a steel blade that is acid etched approximately half way up the surface. The reverse side has etchings that include a gathering of flags with a shield and cannon, the letters "U.S.", and floral designs. The obverse side has etchings that include floral patterns, a gathering of flags with a shield, and a spread eagle. The hilt is made of gilded brass. The pommel has a spread eagle on one side and a shield and scroll pattern on the other side. The end cap is connected to the pommel and has a design of leaves and berries. The knuckle bow has a hole for a tassel at the pommel end and a floral and arrow pattern. The counter guard has a spread eagle with shield surrounded by six banners (3 on each side) and an open wreath. The eagle is holding an olive branch and a gathering of arrows in its talons. The quillon has a lions head decoration. The hinged guard has a U.S. shield with war implements and a open wreath of holly and berries. A place for an adjustment button is at the hilt near the ricasso to control the positioning of the hinged guard. The grip is black fish skin with brass cording over wood. The grip has two brass rings, one at each end, that are decorated with a geometric pattern. The scabbard (part b) is made of black painted steel with applied gilded brass bands. The bands all have a floral pattern. The throat band has two suspension rings and the middle band has one. The bands are attached with brass screws. An applied brass insert is at the throat. The drag appears to be a helmet pattern and is attached by one screws. The drag is decorated with a star on one side and flags on the other. |

This sword was worn by David Fenimore Cooper Weller (b. 3-1-1843) of Elizabethtown, KY. Weller served in Co. C, 2nd Ky Infantry also known as Lewis' Brigade. Following the war, Weller served in the Kentucky State Guard. Weller died on 10-09-1943 in Louisville, KY. |
