Description |
This is a McKeever cartridge box. It is made of black leather and is hinged at the bottom with a brass rod. There are brass reinforcements on the cover at the edge. There is a leather strap with a brass circle that is used to close the box sewn to the top of the back cover. The closing stud (located on the front cover) is also brass. There are two belt loops on the back attached by brass tacks. On the front "KSG" is embossed in an oval. On the inside are canvas loops for 20 cartridges for the M1873 Springfield rifle. Engraved into the the leather on one of the exterior sides is, "M.R.". |
Notes |
This is the type of box used they the Kentucky State Guard for use with the trapdoor type Springfield rifles. They were apparently issued in 1885. |
