Description |
This is a star medal for a Grand Army of the Republic veteran. It has smaller stars at each point of the star, and a circular center with five figures. Two of the figures stand on either side of the scene and are shaking hands in profile, the backs of a figure kneeling next and a child are in the middle, and one figure is standing in the background facing front. Below the figures at the circle edge is written, "1861-Veteran-1866." The reverse side has a circle of 33 stars and within it different symbols that meet at a shield in the center. In each point of the star there is a branch. Along one edge, "B40202" is stamped. |
Notes |
The Grand Army of the Republic was the first important veterans orgainization, founded in 1866 in Springfield, IL. for veterans of the Union army, navy, and marines, 1861-65. It's last encampment was in 1949. |
