Notes |
Elizabeth Mountjoy Garrard (1751-1832) was born in Virginia to William and Phyllis Reilly Mountjoy. She was the wife of the second governor of Kentucky, James Garrard. The mother of twelve children, Elizabeth ran the family household in what is now Bourbon County. Fairfield, built before 1785 and the first family home, was at a low area near Stoner Creek. It is believed Elizabeth was central to moving the family across the creek and to higher cliff to their second family home, Mount Lebanon. This portrait is attributed to Chester Harding, who was born in 1792 and died in 1866. |
