Description |
The painting is a watercolor snow scene on the Kentucky River looking toward Frankfort, Kentucky. The upper left has historic Frankfort in the background with the recognizable steeples of the city churches. A covered bridge crosses the river going toward the right side of the painting. The landscape features a snowy scene with trees on the banks of the river and images of several small boats on the right foreground. The artist's signature is in the lower right corner. |

According to the exhibition catalog from the Eastern Kentucky University show 'A Kentucky Artist: Paul Sawyier (1865-1917)' this painting is known by two different titles including 'Winter in Kentucky' and 'Winter Scene at Frankfort.' The catalog also dates the painting to 1917 which would be in Sawyier's New York period. Sawyier was known to paint Kentucky scenes from photographs while he was in New York. This painting was originally part of the collection of long time Sawyier patron J.J. King. |
