Notes |
Haynie was born in February 1927 in Reedville, Virginia, a small fishing community where his family ran a large fishing business and died in 1999. Growing up, he joined the Coast Guard, and after World War II, went to the College of William and Mary and turned to cartooning. He began his career in Richmond, Virginia, in 1953, then moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, and Atlanta before Courier Journal publisher Barry Bingham brought him to Louisville in 1958. His cartoons proved an immediate hit, becoming prized by collectors and the powerful. Haynie?s cartoons were talked about over coffee and at water coolers across Kentucky. No one was spared. Nationally, John F. Kennedy, Charles De Gaulle, Nikita Khruschev, Martin Luther King, Mao Tse-tung, Barry Goldwater, LBJ, Adlai Stevenson and Ike were boldly imaged in the precarious politics of the times. State and local politicians, too, -- governors, mayors, lawmakers, average Joes and Josephines -- were routinely and royally skewered. Those who say life is not black and white never met Hugh Smith Haynie or saw his work. For that?s exactly how Haynie saw life, and exactly how people who enjoyed the thousands of editorial cartoons he penned over a thirty-eight-year career at the Louisville Courier-Journal saw life through his eyes. |
