Description |
This is a small steel metal box. It is the size and shape to hold United States postal stamps of the late 19th century. It is constructed of two pieces, the first a flat piece of metal wrapped around to create a narrow "U" shape with open top and partially open sides. It also has a half-round cut out on the bottom. The second piece is a shallow box shape with an opening in the bottom. It slides in to the first piece and when closed forms a closed box. The box is stamped on the front with "COMPLIMENTS OF / CENTRAL HOTEL, / MAYSVILLE, KY / GEO. COLLIER, PROP." On the back is stamped "POSTAGE STAMP / BOX." |
Notes |
The Central Hotel in Maysville, Ky., was owned by George Gollier at least from 1883-1886. Sabina Mae Justin Byron most of her siblings were born in Newport and/or Covington Kentucky. In 1902 Sabina married Mark Bennett Byron Jr. and they moved to Cincinnati Ohio. She already had siblings and other family living in Cincinnati and/or Norwood Ohio as early as 1867, and apparently most had relocated there by the early 1900s. It is assumed that during a visit to Kentucky, a family member stayed at the Central Hotel and received this stamp box. Owners of the stamp box: Sabina Mae Justin1874-1953 Mary Byron McCullough's paternal grandmother Mark Bennett Byron Jr (1881-1946) Mary Byron McCullough's paternal grandfather Mark Bennett Byron III (1903-1983) Mary Byron McCullough's father Frances Alston Byron(1909-1998) Mary Byron McCullough's mother (the stamp box & other Bryon family items in her possession following her 1952 divorce from Mark Bennett Byron III.
