Description |
a) This Stetson hat is made of tan nutria. It has a tall crown with a crease on the top and one on each side of the crown. The brim is turned up all the way around. There is a darker tan grosgrain ribbon around the crown with a bow on the side. There is a leather headband but no lining on the interior of the hat. b) The hat box is an oval cardboard box covered with tan paper. The lid is coverd with paper that is red on top and tan on the side. Inside the hatbox is a cardboard mold for supporting the hat. There is a piece of paper stapled to the inside of the hat box. Another piece of paper (possible from the same piece) was found at the bottom oft he box and reads, "BIGE". |

Abijah Benjamin "Bige" Combs was the son of Crusoe Combs and Nancy Maggard. He served as sheriff of Perry County, Kentucky (Hazard) 1914-1918. Because he was a tall, physically intimidating man he never carried a weapon. He rode a Tennessee Walking horse named Billy. Pictures of Bige on his horse are also part of KHS' collections. At age 21. Abijah was married to Olivia 'Ollie' Baker, daughter of James Monroe Baker and Judith 'Jude' Cornett. The A.B. Combs elementary School in Combs, Ky. is named for Abijah Combs. Abijah and Ollie were married for 52 years. |
