Description |
This is a piece of Consolidated Coal Company coal scrip. It is made of a stamped aluminum desk with a raised rim and a dotted line around the perimeter on both sides. One side of the token reads, "THE CONSOLIDATED COAL CO., / INC. / VAN LEAR / STORE / VAN LEAR, / KY." The reverse says, "GOOD FOR / 2/ STICKS / MONOBEL." |
Notes |
The Consolidated Coal Company was located in Van Lear in Johnson County, Kentucky. The miners in this camp were probably required to purchase their own explosives. Explosive script could be redeemed at the company storehouse for, in this case, 2 sticks of Monobel, a DuPont brand of ammonia dynamite. |
