This political poster has a white background with red and blue text. The top portion of the poster is dark blue with white stars and is shaped to look like waving flag. "Democrats for the '80s" is printed in blue below the stars. In red text under this the poster says "Elect Alben W. / Barkley II / for Commissioner / of Agriculture / Farmer Veteran / A Heritage of Integrity / in Public Office." Between the words "Farmer" and "Veteran" is a small blue star. A blue and white image of Barkley wearing a suit and tie is printed to the left of the text. Across the bottom of the poster in small blue text is printed "Paid for by Barkley for Commissioner of Agriculture, Pat Mobley, Treasurer, 325 Woodcreek, Paducah, Kentucky 42001." To the right of this text is a small union logo in blue ink which is shaped like and oval. The logo reads "Allied Printing / Trades Council / Union Label / Paducah, KY" and has a small number "6" on its right side. |
Notes |
Alben W. Barkley II won the election for Commissioner of Agriculture in 1979, beating out Republican candidate Ron C. Gray, Jr. In 1983 he ran for Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky but lost in the primary. This object was donated December 30, 1986 by Drexell R. Davis. Davis, a self-described "Yellow Dog" Democrat, held several elected positions in the Kentucky state government. His thirty-three years of public service prompted his interest in collecting political memorabilia. |
