Description |
This is a Spanish Imperial national flag. It is machine sewn. It has a field of two red stripes and one yellow stripe with the yellow in the center. The Spanish coat of arms located on the yellow stripe toward the hoist side. The red stripes are constructed of a panel about 16 ¼ inches high and a panel about 8 ½ inches high. The yellow stripe is constructed of two panels about 12 inches and one panel about 15 inches high. Note: Measurements are approximate due to major repairs made to the flag which creates folds and pleats in several places. The coat of arms is red and white. It features an oval with a crown on top. The left half of the oval is white with a red lion standing. The right half of the oval is red with a white castle on it. The hoist is bound in a heavy white cotton fabric sewn into a loop. A heavy hemp rope is attached to the inside of the loop with heavy cotton string. The top of the rope forms a loop. The bottom of the rope extends about 35 inches beyond the flag and is frayed at the end. The top and bottom edges area raw edges. The fly end has a double fold hem. The flag has several large repairs running the length of the flag. This has made the flag shorter than originally constructed and has forced the hoist with rope to be coiled at the top and bottom of the yellow stripe. The flag has been attached to a large piece of muslin fabric for conservation purposes. |
