Description |
This is a State of North Carolina one dollar note, September 1, 1862 issue, plate C. It is printed in black ink on beige paper. The serial number is 873. It is hand written in ink and is located near the top left of center. There are no illustrations on this note. On the left end is a banner with decorative flourishes surrounding it and "BY AUTHORITY OF LAW" in it. On the top edge in the center section are three small tabs. In the upper left corner is the serial number and the plate letter; in the upper right corner is a large number "1." In the center is inscribed in a variety of fonts "THE STATE / OF / NORTH CAROLINA / Will pay to Bearer One Dollar at / the Treasury on or before 1st Jany. 1866. / ONE DOLLAR / Raleigh / Sept. 1st 1862." In the lower left corner of the center section is a patterned circle with the number "1." At the bottom is the signature for the public treasurer. On the right end is a vertical rectangle with a graphic design in it. At top and bottom of the rectangle is a smaller shaded rectangular with the word "ONE" in it. Between these is an oval with patterns and flourishes. Inside the oval is "Receivable in Payment / of all / Public Dues." The maker's mark on the bottom is almost completely faded but says "J.T. PATERSON & COMPANY, AUGUSTA, GA." The reverse is blank. |

During the Civil War, both the Union and the Confederacy issued paper currencies. Individual Confederate states and even cities and towns also issued their own paper money. Confederate bills often featured imagery reflecting Southern values and scenes of slavery, while Union notes generally featured more traditional imagery. |
