Description |
This is a State of Georgia ten dollar note, February 15, 1862 issue, plate A, in black ink on beige paper. The serial number is 255. It is located at center and is hand written in ink. The central image is Ceres standing with her left hand on a stalk of corn, a bag of apples below it and a sailing ship is in the distance. The left side of the engraving is obscured by a black treasury seal stamped on it. In the center is the seal of the State of Georgia and the border says "TREASURY OF GEORGIA / 1862." On both short ends is a vertical rectangle with a pattern and the word "TEN" in it. On the top edge "Milledgeville, Ga." is inscribed left of center and "February 15th 1863" right of center. Below these are the plate letters and a patterned circle with the Roman numeral "X" in it. Around the left circle is inscribed "RECEIVABLE IN PAYMENT OF ALL DUES TO THE STATE." Around the right circle is "AND TO THE WESTERN & ATLANTIC RAIL ROAD." Below these and the central image is inscribed in a variety of fonts "THE STATE OF GEORGIA / Will pay bearer TEN DOLLARS Redeemable in / Eight per cent State Bonds or Specie, Six months after a treaty of peace or when / The Banks of Savannah and August resume Specie payment if before that time." Under this is a red overprint in a long horizontal rectangle. It is slightly off center and below its proper location around the domination "TEN DOLLARS." Below this are the signatures for the comproller general and the treasurer. Between the signatures is the Georgia state seal (which features three columns) with a ribbon below that is inscribed "REGISTERED." The maker's mark is on the bottom edge "Douglas. Engr. N. Orleans." The reverse is blank. |
