Description |
This is a State of Louisiana "Cotton Pledged" note for two dollars and 50 cents ($2.50), issued on May 1, 1862. It is printed in black ink with a green overprint and a red underprint on beige paper. The serial number is 46899. It is located near the top, left of center. A fine red underprint is printed over the whole note, noticeable mostly because it is printed too high and the bottom is 1/4 inch from the bottom. In the upper left corner is the image of a man surrounded by sheaves of wheat. In the lower left corner is inscribed "Receivable in Payment / of all Dues to the State / and Counties except the / Military Tax." In the center is inscribed in a variety of fonts "ON DEMAND AFTER PROCLAMATON TO PRESENT, / THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI / Will Pay to Bearer the sum of/ Two Dollars and fifty Cents / Out of proceeds of Cotton Pledged for Redemption / of this Note, at the Treasurer's Office in Jackson, / Mississippi. / Issued 1st day of May 1862" (1st, May and the 2 of 1862 is hand written in ink). A green overprint that appears to be stamped rather than printed is over this inscription. It has "COTTON PLEDGED" in a semicircle near the top and an image that includes a cotton bale over two crossed flags and a star at the top. Below this are the signatures for the auditor and treasurer. In the upper right corner is are the number "2" and "50 [over] 100." In the lower right corner is the image of a Native American holding a tomahawk in his right hand, a bow in his left hand and with a quiver of arrows on his back. The reverse is blank. |
