Notes |
This jacket belonged to Howitt C. Martin (1939-2022). A native of Greenville, Kentucky, Howitt attended Drakesboro Community High School. Located in Drakesboro, the school served Black students from 1930 until its closure in 1964 due to de-segregation. According to a May 1964 newspaper article in the Messenger-Inquirer of Owensboro, Drakesboro Community High School graduated 401 students while in operation. Sutcliffe's was a sporting goods store in Louisville, Kentucky. The Bowling Green Daily News called the business the largest sporting goods store in the South. Advertisements for the store appear as early as 1901. Davidson Supply Co. of Greensboro, North Carolina bought the company at the end of 1968. |
