Description |
This is page 198 of the March 29, 1862 edition of "Harper's Weekly." It consists of five wood engraved prints. The upper four are headlined "Rebel Infernal Machines (Members of the Peace Society) Found At Columbus Kentucky", and were originally sketched by Alexander Simplot. The upper left image is captioned "Spiked & Disabled Guns At Columbus, Kentucky," and shows ruined artillery components scattered around a gun emplacement. The upper middle image is titled "Finding Infernal Machines in Fort Columbus, Ky," and shows three men in the foreground inspecting two explosive devices they have just dug up. The image below that is captioned "Infernal Machine" and Small Electric Machine Found In Each." Pictured is a round metal container, tapering at the top, with handles on either side and a lid, also with a handle. Next to it is a rectangular wooden box containing wire coils, presumably the detonation device. The image in the upper left corner is titled "Subterranian Electrical Battery At Columbus, KY," and shows two soldiers standing in a wood frame structure with a long counter running along the right hand wall. On the counter sit three large open boxes containing what appear to be wire coils. Three large rolls of wire lean against the counter. The lower image is captioned "Fort Clinch, Fernandina, Florida, Now Occupied By General Wright's Union Forces," and was originally drawn by Theo. R. Davis. Three men haul a rowboat out of the water next to a wharf, to the right, which has a guard posted on it's entrance. The stockaded fort stretches across the background. Two cabins and some broken trees stand to the right of the fort. |
