Description |
This is a State of Georgia 100 dollar note, April 6, 1864 issue, plate A, in black ink and red overprint on beige paper. The serial number is 5329. It is located in the lower left corner and is hand written in ink. The central image is a detailed lithograph featuring Moneta on the left side leaning on a treasury box. At center is the three columns of the seal of the State of Georgia behind a fence. On the right is a sheaf of wheat, vegetables and two sheep. On the left end is an image of Minerva in an alcove with a sword in her right hand. Below her is the serial number. On the top edge "Milledgeville," is inscribed left of center and "April 6th 1864" right of center. Above and below the central image is inscribed in a variety of fonts "THE STATE OF GEORGIA / WILL PAY THE BEARER ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS AT HER TREASURY / on the 25th day of December next, in Confederate Treasury notes / issued after the 1st of April 1864, if presented within three months / after maturity, otherwise not redeemable except in payment of Public Dues." Over this inscription is a patterned red overprint of the number "100." Below this are the signatures for the comptroller general and treasurer." Between the signatures is a star burst with "REGISTERED" around it. On the right edge is a vertical patterned rectangle with, from top to bottom, the number "100" then "ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS" on an angle, and the number "100" at the bottom. The maker's mark is on the bottom edge left "HOWELL, ENGR." The reverse is not printed, but has a signature "Vollotlen M" on the left edge. |
Notes |
Minerva is the goddess of war. Moneta was the protectress of funds. Money in ancient Rome was coined in her temple. The word "moneta" is where we get the word "money." |
