Description |
This is a State of Alabama five dollar note, January 1, 1864 issue, plate A. The serial number is 15665. It is located on the left side and hand written in ink. The central image is of a mounted overseer watching enslaved people at work in a wheat field. In the upper left corner is a patterned oval with a Roman numeral "V" in the pattern and the number "FIVE" over it in white. The plate letter is below this and Liberty holding a spear with a cap on it and in the lower right corner is a set of scales. On the top edge at center is inscribed "Montgomery / 1st Jan, 1864." Above and to each side of the central image are shield shapes with thin horizontal lines and inscriptions. The left reads "RECEIVABLE IN PAYMENT OF." The right reads "ALL TAXES AND PUBLIC DUES." Between these is inscribed "THE STATE OF ALABAMA" Below the central image in a variety of fonts is inscribed "Will pay FIVE DOLLARS to Bearer / Redeemable in CONFEDERATE TREASURY NOTES or in FIVE / PER CENT. COUPON BONDS of the State at the option of the State." Below this is the signature of the comptroller and treasurer. On the bottom edge are the makers' marks "Engraved by W. Keenan & Co. / Lith & Printed by J.T. Paterson & Co., Augusta, Ga." In the upper right corner is a patterned circle with a white number "5" in it. Below this is a decorative flower decoration. In the lower right corner is the image of a tree with a map hanging from it. A green overprint is located near the bottom at center under the inscription "Will pay..." The reverse is blank. |
