This is a bust portrait of Colonel Robert A. Pearson as a middle aged man. He has short dark hair, brown eyes and a mustache with beard. He is wearing a white shirt with a white stock collar and a black bow tie. His black single-breasted coat is buttoned high with velvet lapel, and short notched collar. The background is blue-green in an oval shape. The portrait is signed: "Nicola Marschall, 1890." |

Colonel Robert A. Pearso was a prominent man of Birmingham, Alabama who sat for Marschall during an 1890 trip to Birmingham by Marschall. Nicola Marschall (1829-1917) was born in Prussia and immigrated to Alabama in 1849. He is credited with designing the first Confederate national flag. He moved to Louisville in 1873 and opened a portrait studio. He was a prolific painter, often traveling to Versailles and Lexington,Ky., and the southern U.S. in general. |
