Description |
This is a State of Alabama twenty-five cent fractional currency Confederate note, January 1, 1863 issue, 2nd series, plate K. The plate letter is located near the upper right corner. It is printed in black ink on beige paper with a red overprint. The serial number is 76796. It is located near the upper left corner and is hand written in ink. The central image is a waggon with cotton bales on it pulled by horses in the country side. In the upper left corner is an ornate frame with an image of a map of Alabama nailed to a tree in it. In the lower left corner on edge is inscribed "Receivable in Payment of all Public Dues." On the bottom edge left is the series number. In the center section inscribed in a variety of fonts is "THE STATE OF ALABAMA / WILL PAY TO BEARER IN / Confederate States / Treasury Notes / When presented at the State Treasury / In sums of TWENTY DOLLARS and upwards / TWENTY-FIVE CENTS. / Montgomery, January 1st 1863." A red overprint of "25 Cts" is over the denomination and date. Below this is the printed signature of the governor, John Gill Shorter. In the upper right hand corner is a patterned circle with the number "25" in it. In the lower right corner is a bust image of Juliet Opie Hopkins in an oval frame. Below this is the maker's mark "Eng.d by J.T. Paterson & Co. / Augusta, Ga." The reverse is blank. |

John Gill Shorter was governor of Alabama from December 2, 1861 to December 1, 1863. Juliet Opie Hopkins was instrumental in providing hospital and medical care for the southern confederate troops during the Civil War. The map and tree were the first arms of Alabama. |
